William McKinley occupies a complicated place in American memory, neither forgotten nor iconic, but consequential in ways that still echo. At the same time, many Americans have become historical icons because of the work that they performed while in office. William McKinley exists somewhere between these two extremes after the influential deeds that he performed across his time in politics.

McKinley helped to calm some of the turbulent waters of American politics from a position that was fairly behind-the-scenes. Yet, he managed to make enough of a name for himself that he could garner enough support to win the presidency. His fervent campaigning along with his many years of dedicated service earned William McKinley quite a few real supporters. To them, McKinley was a man who could have helped right the nation during a rather stagnant period. Such was the man’s intent.

He preached the values of progressivism all the while understanding the actual inner workings of politics so that he could practically reform a system that was failing so many. But that wasn’t to be. McKinley’s time in office was cut short. Still, because he was so prudent in how he used his time holding office, McKinley helped invest in reform. Those investments would pay off heavily and produce one of America’s most prosperous ages. As much as to test, this quiz is meant to inform.
