The Space Race
The heavens were calling, and mankind was listening. The Space Race was a period when humankind pushed against the hard limits of physics and politics to achieve something once considered impossible: leaving Earth.
Scientific knowledge had advanced a great deal by that point. Thanks to the tireless work of many generations of physicists, human beings were finally getting a sense of what was and was not possible in their goal of someday leaving Earth’s atmosphere. When the time came to make that dream a reality, the two most powerful nations on the planet found themselves so politically and ideologically divided that each one wanted to claim important space objectives before its rival.
Morale and national security were at stake. To prove their superiority and ensure they didn’t fall behind in a new realm of weapons development, those two political juggernauts began spending unprecedented amounts of money on their space programs. This is where the Space Race got its name. With near-endless resources behind them, two enemies sought to achieve space milestones first while the rest of the world looked on with bated breath. Join us as we dive deep into the people, dates, and events that made this period truly historic.
