The mid 1800s in American history truly were a time of division. Not only was the slavery question boiling over into conflicts that would eventually ignite the Civil War, but religious schisms were also driving people to violent acts against neighbors whom they viewed as dangerous heretics. Brigham Young was central to one such movement, finding himself a leading member of one of the most prominent religions to emerge from American soil.

Young’s charisma and knack for logistics helped him climb the ranks of his faith until he became one of its very first leaders, gaining a reputation as a prophet for the new age. His legacy is naturally tied to religion. Because of that fact, this quiz will only examine the concrete facts surrounding his life and deeds, not the dogmatic beliefs surrounding him. Such a baseline will be helpful in discussing Brigham Young as a historical figure, which is our goal here.

With a band of thousands looking to him for guidance, Brigham Young led a journey through the desert based on faith that they would find a new settlement to call home. Where they settled, he became both a spiritual and political leader, with many of his deeds upon reaching that position becoming surprisingly controversial not only to the outside world but surprisingly within his own church’s echelon in recent years.

As much as to test, this quiz is meant to inform, so we hope you come out of it knowing something new. How much do you know about this influential historical figure? Take our Brigham Young quiz to find out.
